About the speaker

Dr Nida Alahmad is Co-Director of CRITIQUE: Centre for Ethics and Critical Thought. Prior to joining the University of Edinburgh, she was a Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellow at the Department of Conflict and Development Studies, Ghent University (2016-2018). She received her PhD from the New School for Social Research, and was a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University and a visiting fellow and research associate at The European University Institute.

Nida has worked as a consultant with a number of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) including the Committee to Protect Journalists and the International Center for Transitional Justice. She has received a number of honours and awards including fellowships from the United States Institute of Peace, The Mellon Research Fellowship in Security and Humanitarian Action and a number of New School awards and fellowships, including the Frieda Wunderlich Memorial Award for an outstanding dissertation.

About the seminar series

Each semester, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (IMES) welcomes a fantastic range of guest speakers, PhD students and colleagues from across the University to present a seminar on their research.

This semester, the series focuses on the many different people, disciplines and Schools engaged in research in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Edinburgh, and on their work in progress.
