Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies Seminar Series: Anthony Gorman

In brief

Guest speaker - Dr Anthony Gorman (University of Edinburgh)

Chair - Ebtihal Mahadeen (University of Edinburgh)

Title - “We must not reduce reform to the penal measures taken by other peoples…”:  Towards a Middle Eastern Penology (1900-1953)

Abstract

by Anthony Gorman

The practice of imprisonment as a post-judicial punishment in the Middle East has generally been explained as a result of increasing Western influence and occupation from the mid-19th century onwards.

In this seminar, I will explore the way in which penologists from the region sought to modify these imported understandings of punishment to something more appropriate to Middle Eastern penal systems.

About the speaker

Dr. Anthony Gorman is Senior Lecturer in IMES where he teaches modern Middle Eastern history and politics.

Among his research interests are the anarchist movement in the Mediterranean before World War I, the history of the prison in the Middle East before 1950, and modern Egyptian historiography.

About the seminar series

Each semester, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (IMES) welcomes a fantastic range of guest speakers, PhD students and colleagues from across the University to present an evening seminar on their research.

This semester, topics range from Islamic Twitter in Saudi Arabia and penal measures in the contemporary MENA region, to Shi’a polemics and women under the Umayyad caliphate.

All seminars will be followed by a Q&A and wine reception.
