The Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival (ESFF) showcases the best of Spanish and Latin American cinema.
The opening film this year is The Candidate, the latest Goya Awards success which tackles the topic of corruption through an exciting thriller.
The School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC) is delighted that so many of our community are involved in the sixth ESFF, from Marian A. Aréchaga (Curator) and Patricia Rueda (Producer), who teach in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies (SPLAS), to students, graduates and staff from across our Film and SPLAS programmes whose roles range from welcoming guests, to co-ordinating the Festival's schools programme and introducing films.

100 years of Spanish Party
Join us to celebrate 100 years of Spanish at the University of Edinburgh with a big fiesta. The Spanish Society and the Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival have prepared a Spanish style night with Spanish music, a DJ, balloons, a photo-call, Spanish food and drinks and cake.
This event takes place on 5th October in Teviot - Underground at 10pm.
Voices from women’s history
Interested in twentieth-century history? As part of the sixth Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival, this project brings back the legacy of women who played a key role in twentieth-century history or actively lived through the social and literary avantgarde of Spain and Latin America. Professor Nuria Capdevila-Arguelles (University of Exeter) and Spanish filmmaker Paula Ortiz present their thoughts and words in an educational audio-visual format. In Cartasvivas you will find ideas, emotions and achievements of women that participated in the tense modernity of the last century.
This free event takes place on 9th October in the Project Room (1.06), 50 George Square at 5:30pm.
Cunninghame Graham Lecture
The Cunninghame Graham Lecture was established in 1996 in honour of Robert Cunninghame Graham, politician, writer, and adventurer, who spent part of his life in Argentina, and who founded the Scottish nationalist movement and was a member of parliament.
Delivered annually, it is jointly organised by LLC and the Office of Cultural and Scientific Affairs of the Embassy of Spain with the aim of promoting Spanish language and culture in Scotland.
This year's Cunninghame Graham Lecture will see Spanish filmmaker David Trueba give a lecture entitled “Music, Cinema & Literature”, introduced by our own Dr Jose Saval as part of ESFF 2019. While at ESFF, David Trueba will also introduce some of his films in the 80 Years of Exile strand, and present his latest film Almost 40 (Casi 40).
The free Cunninghame Graham Lecture takes place on 10th October in the Old College Lecture Theatre 1.264 at 5:30pm.
Celebrating 100 years of Spanish at Edinburgh
2019 marks the centenary of the Spanish degree and the establishment of the department of Spanish at the University of Edinburgh. Today, we have grown into a large community of teachers, researchers and students in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies (SPLAS). We offer a range of undergraduate degrees, MSc by Research degrees, and PhDs, as well as teaching on interdisciplinary masters programmes. Please do join us for events and activities over the course of the year, including the sixth annual Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival.
