About the play

“Wieso seid ihr stärker als die Wahrheit?”

“How can you be stronger than the truth?”

For the German Play 2023, a new production of Max Frisch’s Andorra (1961) is being staged by the German Play Society. The play is directed by Jolie Chen and Jude Anderson Maguire and will be performed in German with English subtitles.

Set in a fictional Andorra, reminiscent of Frisch’s native Switzerland, Andri is raised as the adoptive Jewish son of a local teacher. Everyone believes that he was rescued as a baby from the neighbouring ‘Blacks’, who have been carrying out a mass persecution of Jews.

The truth is, however, that Andri is not a Jew, but rather the teacher’s illegitimate son. Nevertheless, Andri is convinced of his Jewish identity and is taunted, ostracised, and compartmentalised by the native Andorrans, whose claims to tolerance are exposed as a shabby façade. When the truth about Andri surfaces, it must compete with the prevailing narrative of his ‘difference’, with devastating consequences.

The production is supported by DAAD and the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Edinburgh.
