German Colonialism – History, Memory, Controversy

In brief

Title - German Colonialism – History, Memory, Controversy

Venue -  50 George Square

About the event

Celebrate our second-year students of German and the culmination of their semester of independent research, curated by the students themselves.

Our student have undertaken research related to the history of German colonialism, and they will be on hand to act as guides, answer questions and introduce their topics, which range from early 20th century colonial entertainment (film, fashion, photography, board games, parades), contemporary land rights issues in Namibia, the influence of colonial thought on National Socialism, anti-colonial Westerns produced in the GDR, and commemorative efforts in Germany today

There will be activities to test your knowledge, interactive displays of facts and statistics, chances to give feedback, samples of previous years’ work, and a display of recent scholarship and literary works on the topic of German colonialism. You can also read more about the projects in our exhibition guide.

At the reception, we will serve wine, non-alcoholic drinks and other refreshments, such as German snacks.
