Studying Global Muslim Mobilities: Approaches and Experiences

The panel will highlight three case studies of Muslim mobilities from different parts of the world, including the understudied regions of Central Asia and Southeast Asia. Dr Sayed Mahdi Mosawi will discuss Afghan Refugees and the Politics of Othering in Iran, Dr Syamsul Rijal will chronicle the Diasporic Connections and Cultural-Religious Revival amongst the Yemeni-Hadhrami Communities in Indonesia, and Dr Mira Al Hussain will present her study that inquires Why are Gulf Citizens Leaving for Europe? A New Phenomenon amongst Khaleeji Emigres. 

This panel will be chaired by Dr Sarah Muwahidah and Dr Kholoud Al Ajarma will serve as the discussant. The discussion will provide snapshots of topics offered by the University of Edinburgh MSc on the Globalised Muslim World and is part of the Alwaleed Centre’s broader efforts to “de-centre” Islamic studies.
