Studying Socio-political Polarization: Perspectives from the Muslim World and Global South You are warmly invited to a conversation between Dr Dicky Sofjan (Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies (ICRS), Gadjah Mada University) and Dr Ugur Ozdemir (Senior Lecturer in Quantitative Political Science, University of Edinburgh) on their ongoing research on polarization. The discussion will include challenges in defining this social phenomenon. e.g., its boundaries, manifestations, and implications to society. Dr Sofjan will talk about three major facets of polarization in Indonesia: Religious-based Polarization, Identity-based Polarization, and Environmental and Socioeconomic-based Polarization. Dr. Ozdemir will focus on the theoretical and methodological challenges of defining and measuring polarisation as a multidimensional construct, illustrating his talk with survey data from Turkey, the UK, and the USA.
