Dr. Donker is an Associate Fellow at the Alwaleed Centre. He concurrently holds a Bye Fellowship at Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge. His research falls at the intersection of relational sociology, social movements studies and the study of Islamism in post-2011 Tunisia and Syria. Teije completed his Phd at the European University Institute in Florence (Italy), was a postdoc at the department of Comparative Politics at the University of Bergen (Norway) and held a three year lecturership at the department of Sociology at the University of Cambridge (UK). In addition he had research positions at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands Institute of International Relations Clingendael and Princeton University. In his current research, Teije investigates Islamist movements through the lens of constucting distinctly ‘Islamist’ practices in contentious episodes. Comparing the Syrian conflict and Tunisian transition, he analyzes struggles around constructing the distinctly Islamist (or Salafist, Jihadist, Tablighi, Ikwhani, Nahdaoui, Hizbi, etc) identities; resources; and values that constitute such practices. He is currently drafting a monograph titled Political Islam in the Syrian Conflict and Tunisian Transition: Constructing the Contentious Practices of Islamist Movements to be published at EUP.
