The World of Saadallah Wannous: Dramatic Readings and Iftar

Wannous

Join us for a special evening that begins with a family-friendly Iftar, followed by an exploration of the powerful and timely works of renowned Syrian playwright Saadallah Wannous.

This event marks the culmination of the tireless efforts of Dr Robert Myers from the American University of Beirut and Dr Nada Saab from the Lebanese American University, whose translations bring to life Wannous’s bold critiques of power, oppression and resistance.

The programme will be directed by Dr Robert Myers, a distinguished scholar, playwright, translator and professor at the American University of Beirut, who will introduce Wannous’s work and lead the dramatic readings of the English translations by Myers and Saab of Wannous's most significant plays, including their recently completed translation of 'Historical Miniatures'. The translations will be read by staff and students from the University of Edinburgh.

Additionally, the event will showcase video footage from past productions in Beirut and include Arabic-language performances. There will also be discussions involving novelist Dima Wannous, the daughter of Saadallah Wannous, on the enduring relevance of Wannous's work.

At this pivotal moment, following the fall of the Assad regime after decades of authoritarian rule, Wannous's plays provide urgent reflections on power, oppression, and resistance. His visionary storytelling offers essential historical and cultural context for understanding the complexities of Syria and the Arab world today.
