The People Want Economic Sovereignty: Lessons From Jordan’s Popular Movement A talk by Dr Sara Ababneh, University of Sheffield. In this talk I draw on Jordanian’s Popular Movement (2011-12) (al Hirak al Sha’bi al Urduni, Hirak in short) to unpack how Hirak activists understood reform. Unlike traditional political parties which call for electoral law and political party law reform Hirakis demanded economic and social justice and -what I will refer to as- economic sovereignty. In doing so, Jordanian Hirakis build on anti-colonial and independence activists' work arguing that to have true sovereignty and self-determination people need to have economic decision-making rights, both on the national and the international level. I examine the case of the Hirak to think through what lessons this provides in terms of critiques of liberal democracy.Dr Sara Ababneh is Lecturer in International Relation at the University of Sheffield and Visiting Fellow at the Alwaleed Centre, University of Edinburgh. Dr. Ababneh has conducted research on Mandate Palestine, gender and Islamism, Muslim family laws, and labour movements. Her research interests include class, gender, resistance, struggles for liberation, social justice, and economic sovereignty.CLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR FREE.
