Film on campus
The Languages and Humanities Centre
The Language and Humanities Centre (LHC) is located on Buccleuch Place next to George Square. You could use the LHC centre for viewing films and preparing audiovisual clips for in class presentations. There is a self-study room equipped with individual vhs video recorders, DVD players and televisions, four of which also have DVD payers, all available for private study.
The library has a stock of about 5,000 video and dvd films and documentaries, either purchased or recorded from satellite or terrestrial television, available in various languages. The multi-media room is equipped with video editing facilities, both conventional video to video and by using video editing facilities on PC.
Edinburgh University Film Society
As one of our students you will also be able to join one of the specialised film societies, such as the Edinburgh University Film Society or Edinburgh Movie Production Society, which are among the most active and numerous on campus.
Forum
You will be able to become involved with an academic journal, Forum, edited by our postgraduate students, which publishes pieces on film.
Film in Edinburgh
Our students can actively contribute to film-related activities in Edinburgh by assisting staff members and fellow students in organising a range of cultural events such as Diversions: a festival of experimental film and video (May 2008 and November 2009), the UK Festival of Chinese Cinema: Cinema China 2007, The French Film Festival and Africa-in-Motion (ongoing since 2006).
Cultural centres
Cultural centres located in Edinburgh, such as the Institut français d’Ecosse and the Italian Cultural Institute, also house VHS and DVD collections as well as libraries with sections on film.
Cinemas and film festivals
With its numerous cinemas (including two highly rated art-house cinemas), its international film festival and national film festivals and its wealth of galleries and cultural institutes, Edinburgh has a lot to offer to students of film.
