About the event
In honour of the UNESCO International Decade of Indigenous Languages, we're thrilled to host a screening of 'Dear Mother', a 2023 film directed by Sk Shuvo Shadique in the Mru language (an Indigenous language of Bangladesh). This event is co-organised by Film Studies at the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures and CHITrA research network on South Asian Art and Visual Culture.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with film director Sk Shuvo Shadique, Professor Lotte Hoek (School of Social and Political Science), Dr Upali Sraman (School of Divinity), and Emma Dussouchaud-Esclamadon (PhD candidate in Film Studies).
About the film
Damra, a Mru girl from the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, clings to the belief that her mother resides atop an inaccessible mountain. After learning letter writing at school, she hopes to send one to her mother.
'Dear Mother' will be screened in Mru and Bengali, with English subtitles.
Please note the following content warning: the film, while partly experimental, deals with sexual and physical violence, as well as settler colonialism.
How to attend
This event is free to attend, and open to all. No registration necessary, just come along on the day.
