Strindberg’s Creditors is a very modern story; it is a tale of three people who are all in debt to each other. Adolph and Tekla are married and whilst Tekla is away Adolph meets her ex-husband Gustav in a hotel. Gustav begins to torment Adolph and manipulates him into thinking that his marriage is breaking down and his wife is not to be trusted.
Upon Tekla’s return, Gustav attempts a similar conversation with her, but she realises what has happened and as Adolph has overheard everything, their relationship is destroyed. In the battle of the sexes much has changed since Strindberg’s time, however, Creditors presents us with three characters that are all indebted to each other for different reasons, and the characters could well have been written today.
The notion of debt, whether it be fiscal or emotional is definitely relevant to today’s society, and something we hope to emphasise.
