About the event

In August 1945 atomic bombs instantaneously reduced the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to ruin. By the end of that year they had taken over 200,000 lives with survivors suffering devastating after-effects of radiation.

After the successful exhibition at the University of Stirling in 2025, the University of Edinburgh is proud to host this exhibition from the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims at 50 George Square in the Ground Floor Hall.

The exhibition presents contemporary reactions to the atomic bombings, their aftermath, and the emergence of anti-nuclear peace movements around the world, through a display of images and texts from the archives and special collections held in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

A talk and origami paper crane workshop will be held to mark the opening of the exhibition. The talk will be titled 'Memories of Hiroshima on the Year Abroad', and will be given by Dr Helen Parker (Lecturer in Japanese Studies, the University of Edinburgh). The origami workshop is titled 'Senbazuru for Peace: Story of Sadako's One Thousand Cranes and Hands-on Workshop for Origami Paper Cranes', and will be provided with some help from students from Japan.
