Demonstration and lecture

Discover a new side of samurai culture through Kenshibu, a unique Japanese performing art that combines the Japanese sword, poetry, and expressive movement.

The word Ken-shibu is made up of three elements: Ken (sword), Shi (poetry), and Bu, which refers not simply to dance, but to a uniquely Japanese form of movement rooted in spirituality, etiquette, and artistic expression.

Using the Japanese sword and folding fan, Kenshibu brings the spirit of the samurai and the imagery of classical poetry vividly to life through powerful yet graceful movements.

Through live demonstrations, this lecture offers a fascinating introduction to the values, aesthetics, and philosophy of the samurai, while providing a deeper appreciation of Japanese culture.

Workshop

This workshop offers an introduction to Ken-shibu. Starting with the basics of sword handling, participants will learn the fundamental techniques and body movements essential to Ken-bu. Participants will also have the opportunity to experience expressive movements using a traditional Japanese fan.

Through learning the fundamentals of sword and fan techniques, participants will gain a deeper understanding of Japanese traditional culture, its sense of aesthetics, and the spirit of the Samurai.

No previous experience is required, and beginners are welcome.

Important information

• For safety reasons, wooden practice swords (bokken) will be used instead of real swords throughout the workshop.
• Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for movement. If needed, please bring a towel and a drink.
• Recommended age: 13+

These events are open to all, and free to attend. The recommended age for the workshop is 13+. You can book both parts for free on Universe.com.
