About the event

When teaching Japanese studies, knowledge of Japan is essential. Teachers, therefore must provide opportunities to learn about Japanese culture and social contexts, and integrate cultural learning into language learning.

As part of the British Association for Teaching Japanese (BATJ) community-building project for Japanese language teachers, this workshop aims to further promote Japanese language education and studies in the region. The theme for the day is 'In Between'.

This event is made up of two parts:

  1. Screening of the documentary film 'In Between - In Search of Native Language Spaces': 10am to 12 noon, MacLaren Stuart Room, G.159 and online
  2. An Introduction to Extensive Reading: Creating Engaging Reading Materials: 1pm to 3:30pm, MacLaren Stuart Room, G.159

In the morning session, we will focus on heritage language education policies in Japanese society from the perspectives of both Japanese studies and language education. This session will be held simultaneously in Edinburgh, London, and online.

The film screened during this first part explores the challenges faced by immigrant children in Japan striving to maintain their native languages in a multicultural society. Through interviews with grassroots organisers, families, and experts, the documentary sheds light on Japanese society's attitude towards its foreign residents, exploring both the challenges of the present and the possibilities for the future.

The afternoon’s extensive reading workshop aims to enhance teachers' skills in conducting these activities through tasks that involve rephrasing Japanese texts. This also offers participants, many of whom may be non-native speakers, an opportunity to improve their Japanese and enhance their "rewrite skills" necessary for clearly explaining their research.

Through this workshop, positioned “in between” Japanese language education and Japanese studies, we hope to contribute to the mutual development of both fields through collaborative efforts in Scotland and the UK.
