About the event

This special musical event, a spin-off from the new opera 'The Great Wave', will feature a shakuhachi lecture and performance by shakuhachi player Shozan Hasegawa. The lecture will be mainly presented in Japanese with English translations.

The shakuhachi is a flute-like instrument made from bamboo, with a profound sound. Many people have never experienced anything like it. Shozan Hasegawa, who performs in 'The Great Wave', will give a special lecture on the instrument as well as perform several songs. Come along and discover the charm of the shakuhachi.

This event is organised in collaboration with the Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh. Please note that photos and videos will be taken at this event for use by the Consulate, the University of Edinburgh and KAJIMOTO for promotional purposes on social media.

Dai Fujikura and Harry Ross's 'The Great Wave' is an extravagant story about artist Katsushika Hokusai and his famous woodblock print The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Information about the opera, along with tickets and showtimes can be found on the Scottish Opera website.
