About the speaker

Choi Young-Mi is a poet and novelist from South Korea. She has published seven poetry collections and penned two novels. Her first volume of poems 'At Thirty, the Party was Over' (1994) hit Korean society for delicate but bold expressions and piercing satire on authority. The book has sold over half a million copies.

In 2017, she wrote the poem "Monster" (괴물), which told the story of sexual harassment and abuse by a fictional poet called En. When the poem was released, the public immediately noticed that 'En' was a stand-in character for the celebrated Korean poet Ko Un, which ignited the #Me Too movement in Korea. Off the back of this, the Metropolitan City of Seoul presented Choi Young-Mi with the Sex Equality Award in 2018.

About the Distinguished Lecture series

Each year, the Scottish Centre for Korean Studies welcomes a fantastic range of guest speakers to give a free public lecture. They cover a range of topics, from literature and poetry to international relations.

Often, speakers will present on recent publications, and audiences have the opportunity to participate in question and answer sessions after presentations.

Selected lectures have been recorded and uploaded to the Scottish Centre for Korean Studies’ YouTube channel and Facebook page.
