Scottish Centre for Korean Studies Distinguished Lecture Series: Brother Anthony In brief Title - Overcoming Barriers: Korea in Translation Venue - Project Room 1.06, 50 George Square Speaker - Professor Brother Anthony (Sogang University) About the event Brother Anthony (who has been publishing translations of Korean poetry and fiction since 1990) will first talk about some of the books by which Korea and its region first became known in centuries past, particularly those that were translated into a variety of languages. He will then summarise the ways in which Korean writing first underwent translation into English, before further summarising some of the 15 popular novels he has recently translated. Finally, he will discuss both: the annotated translations from Latin of the letters written by the first two Korean Catholic priests - Kim Dae-gon and Choe Yang-eop an annotated translation from French of the two-volumed History of the Catholic Church in Korea by Charles Dallet (1874). About the speaker Professor Brother Anthony is an Emeritus Professor at Sogang University, and Chair-Professor at Dankook University. He has published thirty volumes of English translations of Korean poetry and fiction, including seven volumes of work by Ko Un. He is a naturalised Korean citizen with the name An Sonjae.
