Asian Studies Seminar Series: Jeff Wasserstrom In brief Chair - Professor Jeff Wasserstrom (University of Irvine) Roundtable members - Jane Duckett (University of Glasgow), Konrad Lawson (University of St. Andrews) and Aaron Moore (University of Edinburgh) Title - China in 2022 – A Year of Great Significance Venue - 50 George Square About the event This is a unique event bringing together senior scholars in Chinese Studies in Scotland and into conversation with one of the most active and prolific writer and world leading scholar in the field from the US. The panel will take the form of a conversation between scholars with different areas of expertise who will take up some of the big issues and dramatic developments that affected life in China and influenced international coverage of the country last year. Policies toward COVID-19, protests and spectacles, and the role of social media will be among the topics addressed initially, but time will also be set aside for discussion of international issues, whatever topics associated with China are in the news when the event takes place, and the subjects that the audience expresses an interest to hear the panellists, three historians and a political scientist from three Scottish institutions and one American one, address. About the chair Jeffrey Wasserstrom is Chancellor's Professor of History at the University of California, Irvine, where he also holds courtesy appointments in the Law School and in the Literary Journalism Program, and he is spending the spring of 2023 as a Leverhulme Visiting Professor at Birkbeck College. He has written, co-written, edited, or co-edited a dozen books, the most recent of which are Vigil: Hong Kong on the Brink (Columbia Global Reports, 2020), which he wrote, and The Oxford History of Modern China (2022), which he edited. In addition to contributing to academic journals, he often writes for newspapers, magazines and literary reviews. About the series Each year, Asian Studies welcomes a fantastic range of guest speakers and colleagues to present a seminar on their research, spanning fields as diverse as film and media, literature, religion, society, politics and international relations.
