About the event

We're delighted to invite you to a screening of the documentary 'Kamejiro - The U.S. Military’s Most Feared Man' (2017), directed by Tadahiko Sako.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director.

The event is co-organised by Asian Studies at the University of Edinburgh and the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation.

About the documentary

Following the end of WWII, Okinawa remained occupied by US military forces for 27 years (1945-1972). Today, 50 years after the reversion of Okinawa to Japan, the archipelago continues to be one of the world’s largest hubs for US military bases. The US military presence in these islands has sparked resistance and opposition from Okinawans, following numerous incidents of accidents, noise pollution, environmental degradation and crime over the years.

Kamejirо̄ Senaga (1907- 2001) was a dogged opponent of US military control in postwar Okinawa. Kamejirо̄ is considered a hero among Okinawans; he mustered audiences numbering in the thousands whenever he gave a speech, and attracted fanatical support. Worried, the US military tried various stratagems to suppress him, but with the support of the Okinawan people, Kamejirо̄ continued to fight, rising to be Mayor of Naha and then a member of the national Diet.

This film paints a picture of the man himself and explains the political circumstances of his time, shedding light on the roots of present-day public opinion in Okinawa, which continues to host massive military bases to this day. The film describes Kamejirо̄ s life, but also brings out the voice of the Okinawan people as a whole, with echoes of other small islands around the world facing similar issues.
