About the event

At the second screening of 2024's Japanese Film Festival, we're showing Sumodo (2020) directed by Eiji Sakata.

There will be a short introductory lecture before the film, and refreshments, including sake and Japanese snacks, will be served after the screening.

Film summary

This is Japan's first sumo documentary movie - it follows sumo wrestlers who dedicated their lives to sumo, such as severe rituals, spiritual trainings, fellowships, and a fight for life. Focusing on two wrestlers intimately for six months, the documentary's examines the lifestyle, motivations, intentions and aspirations of sumo wrestlers and also gives credence to the tradition, heritage and connection of the sport to Japan, its country of origin.

A series of free film screenings and short talks, co-organised by the Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh and the Japanese Studies department at the University of Edinburgh.
