Asian Studies Seminar Series: Konstantinos Tsimonis In brief Date - 7 February 2024 Venue - Project Room 1.06, 50 George Square Speaker - Dr Konstantinos Tsimonis (King's College, London) Title - '15 years of COSCO in Piraeus: Investment Embeddedness and the Question of Chinese 'influence'' About the event This talk focuses on the landmark investment of China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) in the port of Piraeus and discuss its political, social, economic and environmental repercussions. Dr Konstantinos Tsimonis will approach COSCO's investment as an embedded phenomenon, i.e. integrated in the economic, political, legal and social context of the host state, which shape it more that we often assume, but also create other, less-discussed types of vulnerability. In order to assess investment-induced 'Chinese influence', its challenges and ways to respond to it, Konstantinos will use a grounded approach to unpack the agency of local and European actors in shaping the process of its development and its outcomes. About the speaker Dr Konstantinos Tsimonis is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Society at King's College London, a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of International Relations (IIR), Athens and a Fellow of the Mediterranean Programme for International Environmental Law and Negotiation (MEPIELAN), Athens. Dr Tsimonis’ work concentrates on the ways institutional actors in China’s authoritarian polity (partially) adapt in order to perform new roles in the context of marketisation and globalisation, and their impact on policy-making, state-society relations and governance in China and abroad.
