Asian Studies Seminar Series: Ikuya Aizawa In brief Date - 24 January 2024 Venue - Project Room 1.06, 50 George Square Speaker - Dr Ikuya Aizawa (University of Nottingham) Title - 'English Medium Instruction (EMI) in Japanese Higher Education' About the event English Medium Instruction (EMI) has seen significant growth in higher education worldwide, with a rapid expansion in Japan as part of its internationalisation efforts. EMI refers to the practice of offering academic subjects taught in English in countries or jurisdictions where English is not the first language of the majority of the population. Although EMI has grown exponentially in higher education in recent decades, research has reported the lack of evidence on the impact of the medium of instruction on students’ content learning outcomes. In this talk, Dr Ikuya Aizawa will introduce a study conducted at a Japanese university. This research compared students in English Medium Instruction (EMI) with those in Japanese Medium Instruction (JMI) in terms of their content learning outcomes. Based on these findings, he will discuss the importance of academic language support, support mechanisms for international students, and the impact of internationalisation on student educational experiences and academic outcomes in Japanese higher education. Dr Aizawa will conclude the talk with recommendations for researchers and practitioners who are questioning the value of gaining content knowledge through EMI, while also aiming to promote the further expansion of EMI programs. This seminar is in partnership with the Japan Foundation. About the speaker Dr Ikuya Aizawa is an Assistant Professor in Applied Linguistics at the School of English at the University of Nottingham. He is the program convenor for the MA in Applied Linguistics, and lectures and supervises on the BA, MA and PhD programs in Applied Linguistics. Prior to moving to Nottingham in 2022, he completed a DPhil in Education at the University of Oxford in 2022, served as a tutor on the MSc in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition, and as a research assistant at the English Medium Instruction Research Group. Previously, he worked as a Japanese language instructor on the BA Japanese Studies at the School of English and Modern Languages at Oxford Brookes University. He was an exchange student at the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures at the University of Edinburgh from 2011 to 2012. His research focuses on Japan, and has most recently appeared in the journal Higher Education, Studies in Higher Education, and International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism.
