About the speaker

Ashley Thorpe is a Reader in the Department of Drama, Theatre & Dance at Royal Holloway, University of London. He is the author, editor or translator of twelve books, most recently including the edited volume 'Intercultural Japanese Noh Theatre: Texts & Analyses of English-Language Noh' (Methuen, 2025) and the solo monograph 'Julian Stair: Memory, Material Ceramics' (Yale University Press, 2024).

He is the organiser of the annual Noh Training Project UK, and a member of Theatre Nohgaku. He has performed Noh in the UK, Ireland, France, Luxembourg, and Japan. In 2018, his own English-language Noh 'Emily', was staged in London.
