Identity and Aspiration: Chinese Muslims in the Arab Gulf Event Summary In recent decades, the strengthening ties between China and the Arab world, particularly the Arab Gulf states, have elevated the visibility and significance of Hui Muslims in Sino-Arab affairs. Benefiting from their dual identity, Hui Muslims have transitioned from a marginalized middleman minority to influential cultural intermediaries within China's Belt and Road Initiative. This presentation delves into the experiences of second-generation Chinese Muslims residing in the United Arab Emirates. It explores their educational ambitions and identity-related quandaries as they navigate a cosmopolitan environment deeply rooted in Arab Muslim culture. The analysis highlights how overarching political and economic forces impact the negotiation between the central and peripheral aspects of their identity hierarchy. By examining these dynamics, the study provides valuable insight into the evolving role of Hui Muslims in the context of contemporary Sino-Arab relations.
