Elvire Corboz is Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Islam and the Middle East at the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, and Senior Associate Fellow at the Alwaleed Centre.

She first studied Arabic and Islamic Studies (along with her other major in musicology) in Switzerland at the University of Geneva. She then earned an MPhil in modern Middle Eastern Studies, followed by a DPhil in Oriental Studies, both from the University of Oxford. Before coming to Edinburgh in 2018, she worked as postdoctoral research associate and lecturer at Princeton University, lecturer at Rutgers University, and assistant professor at Aarhus University.

A scholar of contemporary Shi‘ism, Dr Corboz's main research interests lie with clerical authority (the marja‘iyya) and its transnational networks, Shi‘i communities and institutions in Britain, contemporary Shi‘i philanthropy, as well as Shi‘i Islamist movements in both Iraq and pre-revolutionary Iran. Currently, she is also conducting research on transnational community building amongst Khoja Shi‘a Ithna-Asheri Muslim communities. In addition, she is interested in the study of Sunni-Shi'i relations, especially in European contexts.
