About the event

Join musicians from Japan’s kabuki theatre for a workshop & panel discussion celebrating the beauty of sound in traditional performing arts.

The proceedings will begin with a presentation introducing kabuki. Tanaka Denjirō VII and fellow musicians will then bring Japan's theatrical tradition to the audience with a live performance.

Next, Tanaka Denjirō then joins a panel discussion with Ronald Cavaye (pianist), Dr Michael Wood (musician and psychotherapist), Dr Helen Parker (University of Edinburgh) and others, continuing the theme of celebrating kabuki music in Edinburgh and the world. Potential topics for the panel discussion include common ground in engaging with musical traditions in the twenty-first century; perceptions of Japan and its culture in contemporary Scotland; and the role of the arts in international peacebuilding.

The event is presented in partnership with the Japan Foundation, and is generously supported by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation and the Japanese Consulate in Edinburgh. It forms part of a specially curated series of live concerts and talks, designed to offer unique opportunities for the local community in Edinburgh and visitors to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to learn more about the music in traditional Japanese theatre and its continued importance in contemporary culture.
